Bejeweled[]

Bejeweled was significantly inspired by a web-based game titled "Colors Game" (1999), while it may have also drawn indirect influence from titles such as Shariki, Tetris Attack, and Columns. However, the degree to which these games affected Bejeweled's design is still a matter of conjecture.

The success of Bejeweled has led to the emergence of numerous clones. These games, commonly referred to as match three games, focus on the mechanics of forming combinations of three identical pieces in a row.

Minecraft[]

Infiniminer, an open-ended mining game characterized by its block-based design and launched in April 2009, served as a significant source of inspiration for Persson in the development of "RubyDung." The game notably impacted the visual aesthetics of gameplay, reintroducing the first-person perspective, the distinctive "blocky" graphics, and the foundational mechanics of block construction. Nevertheless, in contrast to Infiniminer, Persson aimed to incorporate role-playing game (RPG) elements into Minecraft.

Since the initial test version of Minecraft, the game has undergone a series of continuous updates, providing numerous feature enhancements at no additional cost to users who have already acquired the game. Each significant update introduces new blocks, items, creatures, and environments for players to discover. Earlier updates often brought about substantial changes to gameplay mechanics and introduced innovative concepts, whereas more recent updates have focused on quality-of-life improvements and refinements to existing features. As of June 13, 2024, the latest major update for the game is the 1.21 "Tricky Trials" update, which features the new Trial Chambers structure, a mob known as the Breeze, and a Mace weapon, along with various other blocks and items. 1.21.5, the release of the game drop tentatively called the Spring Drop 2025, is an upcoming version of Java Edition that is set to release in 2025.

Bejeweled[]

Following the launch of Bejeweled, the game has been adapted for numerous platforms, including mobile phones, smartphones, gaming consoles, plug-and-play devices, in-flight entertainment systems, and others. The franchise has also expanded into various non-video game products, such as slot machines, three board games produced by Hasbro, and a web series featuring characters Snackers and Anchovy from Bejeweled Blitz, among other offerings.

On September 25, 2008, Bejeweled was officially introduced as a complimentary add-on for the fantasy MMORPG World of Warcraft, alongside Peggle. In addition to the standard 'Classic' (Normal) and 'Timed' modes, this add-on features a unique 'Flight' mode, where gameplay commences when the player embarks on a flight from one in-game location to another, aiming to achieve the highest score possible before reaching their destination. The World of Warcraft add-on also incorporates achievements and a leveling system into the game.

In 2014, it was established that Bejeweled and Candy Crush Saga, along with several other similar match-three games, are NP-hard.

Bejeweled is frequently regarded as a significant contributor to the match-3 genre. The series has received numerous accolades. By 2013, PopCap estimated that players had engaged with the game for over 10 billion hours across more than 500 million downloaded copies. In 2020, Bejeweled was honored with induction into the World Video Game Hall of Fame.

Minecraft[]

In June 2014, Microsoft and Mojang announced a revision to the Minecraft end-user license agreement (EULA), which would prohibit servers from accepting donations or payments that would grant players in-game advantages, effectively banning "pay-to-win" models. Owen Hill, a spokesperson for Mojang, clarified the new policy by stating that while pay-to-play servers requiring a fee for access would be permitted, as well as cosmetic enhancements like in-game costumes or pets, the company would take action against practices that allowed players to purchase powerful items such as swords or potions that could confer a competitive edge. This decision was supported by Markus Persson, who noted that he had received numerous complaints from parents regarding their children spending excessive amounts on server-related purchases. However, the Minecraft community and server operators reacted strongly against this enforcement change, likening Mojang to large video game publishers such as Electronic Arts and Activision, which are often criticized for their stringent digital rights management and user agreements. Many voiced concerns that this crackdown would lead to the closure of smaller servers, with some suggesting that Mojang's actions were an attempt to stifle competition for its own Minecraft Realms subscription service.

In 2020, Mojang Studios announced its intention to mandate the use of Microsoft accounts for logging into the Java Edition of the game, leading to the discontinuation of older Mojang Studios accounts. This transition to Microsoft accounts also necessitated that Java Edition players establish Xbox network Gamertags. Mojang Studios justified this shift by highlighting the enhanced security features it would provide, such as the ability for Java accounts to utilize two-factor authentication, options for players to block cyberbullies in chat, and improved parental controls. However, the community reacted with significant opposition to this announcement, particularly criticizing the various technical challenges faced during the process and the compulsory nature of account migration, even for users who do not engage with servers. As of March 10, 2022, Microsoft mandated that all players complete the migration to access the Java Edition of Minecraft. A deadline of September 19, 2023, was set for the completion of account migration, after which all legacy Mojang accounts became inaccessible and could no longer be migrated.

In June 2022, Microsoft and Mojang Studios announced the introduction of a player reporting feature in all forthcoming versions of Java Edition. In earlier development iterations, players had the ability to report others on multiplayer servers for messages that violated the Xbox Live Code of Conduct. The categories for reporting included offensive language, substance abuse, hate speech, threats of violence, and nudity; however, Microsoft later removed the offensive language category from the reporting feature in subsequent builds. Should a player be found in breach of Xbox Community Standards, they would face a ban from all servers for a designated duration or potentially face a permanent ban. The update that included the reporting feature (version 1.19.1) was released on July 27, 2022.

The announcement prompted significant backlash and protests from the community, with one of the primary grievances being that banned players would be prohibited from accessing any server, including private ones. Additionally, many expressed concerns regarding what they perceived as Microsoft's increasing control over its player community and the imposition of censorship. This led some to refer to the version as "1.19.84," drawing a parallel to George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, which explores similar themes of censorship.

The "Mob Vote" was an online initiative orchestrated by Mojang, allowing the Minecraft community to select from three unique mob concepts. The mob that received the most votes was subsequently integrated into a future update, while the other two concepts were discarded, although aspects of these could reappear in later updates as distinct features. The inaugural Mob Vote took place during MINECON Earth 2017 and evolved into an annual event beginning with Minecraft Live 2020. This initiative faced criticism for compelling players to choose a single mob rather than incorporating all three, which led to divisions and disputes within the community. Additionally, it raised concerns about the potential influence of internet bots and prominent Minecraft content creators engaging in vote manipulation. The Mob Vote was also perceived as a significant contributor to the alleged stagnation of new content in Minecraft following Microsoft's acquisition of Mojang in 2014.

In 2023, the Mob Vote presented three passive mobs: the crab, the penguin, and the armadillo, with voting set to commence on 13 October. In reaction, a Change.org petition was launched on 6 October, urging Mojang to abolish the Mob Vote and to implement all three mobs in future updates. This petition garnered around 445,000 signatures by 13 October and was accompanied by calls to boycott the Mob Vote, alongside a satirical "revolutionary" propaganda campaign where supporters produced anti-Mojang and pro-boycott posters reminiscent of 20th-century propaganda. Mojang did not issue an official statement regarding the boycott, and the Mob Vote proceeded as planned, culminating in the armadillo being declared the winner. However, in a blog post outlining their future development plans for Minecraft in September 2024, Mojang announced the retirement of the Mob Vote.
